medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There has been a lively discussion of this on the medieval art list. So far,
the suggestions are:
1) The sacrifice of Isaac (the man is identified as holding a child in an
unspecified text of the 40s);
2) Martin cutting his cloak in half;
3) Martin (or a pagan priest) dealing with a pagan tree;
4) A conflation of 2 and 3.
The church is in Galicia and is dedicated to Saint Martin.
