medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Bill East has done a series of commentaries on the O Antiphons at least
twice (1998 & 2000?) He used subject headings with the individual antiphon
incipits, e.g., O Sapientia, O Adonai, etc. He made references to O Virgo
virginum in a few notes, under O Emmanuel and other headings. There were
quite a few follow on replies with additional info at the time, so you'll
perhaps have to follow through the (separate) threads for each antiphon to
find the info. It has also come up in other threads Bill intiated, so you
might do a string search for the "O Virgo virginum" wording and find more
references.
O Virgo virginum,
quomodo fiet istud?
Quia nec primam similem visa es
nec habere sequentem.
Filiae Ierusalem,
quid me admiramini?
Divinum est mysterium hoc quod cernitis.
BTW, there were also other O Antiphons in other medieval breviaries. If
memory serves, Dom Gueranger in one of the 15 volumes of his _L'Année
liturgique_ has a description and commentary on many of these.
