medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (2. December) is the feast day of:
Chromatius (d. c. 407) Chromatius was raised in Aquileia and became
a priest there. To remain consistent, in 388 he was elected bishop
of the same city. He was a leading bishop of his time, supported
John Chrysostom in his fight with the emperor, and encouraged Rufinus
to translate Eusebius' History and other light classics.
Jan van Ruysbroeck (blessed) (d. 1381) Ruysbroeck is a village near
Brussels, were Jan was born in 1293. He became a priest and
gradually, with some canons of the church of St. Gudula in Brussels,
he founded a religious community. But what J. is known for is a
series of mystic writings, notable for expressing basic Christian
teachings in simple and compelling ways.
