Dear All,
I think the business model for us public libraries is that we can only
support a format that is widely used, and has a predictable lifespan. PS2
has proven to be such a format, and I think GBA would have been, but is now
too far into its lifespan to risk it. XBOX is aiming to be the major player
for the next year, but then PS3 is predicted at end of 2006.
The investment in stock needs to be weighed against income and return
against service aims over this lifespan, so
We invest initially £XXX to get a critical mass of stock
We invest £YYY to promote initially
We update £ZZZ for annually new stock.
The equation is can we get enough back from the initial spike, and the
subsequent tail over the lifespan.
After predicted lifespan we either move to new stock format, and sell what
we can of the remainder or create a back catalogue and live off the tail of
the income.
The other question is how does it fit with other aims. E.g. games in joint
library/Youth services projects. After school sessions that mix games with
access to library staff, etc etc.

Some games from the X-Box will play in the X-Box 360, but not all of them.
In most cases where an X-Box game will play on the X-Box 360, the X-Box 360
owner will have to connect to the X-Box Live service to download patches
just to be able to play the game.
I suspect this will mean that not many X-Box 360 owners will play many X-Box
games
Hope this helps

As Mr Playstation Game Buyer for our group I've asked about buying X-Box
games and am awaiting a reply from the management. Does anyone know if there
is a difference between games for the X-Box and those for this new X-box 360
that's sold out before Christmas? If it's like Playstation and the PS2 I
suspect that will have some effect on what we buy if we do decide to buy
anything.
