medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear all,
To make sure I wasnīt hallucinating as a result of grading too many exams,
I did a google search for uncumber upside down
The result included a site Norfolk Churches with a reference to
possible upside down crucifixion for St. Wilgefortis/Uncumber in the Google
description.
The site looks quite interesting, but I havenīt examined it in detail.

Dear Susan
From memory, Uncumber is another (English) name for Wilgefortis, the martyr
who grew a beard to avoid marrying a pagan. She was (I think) the patron
saint of (unhappy) wives.
And along these lines, the catholic encyclopaedia has this:
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15622a.htm
But nothing on her being crucified upside down.
all the best
