"The words the blues stand for the blue devils, meaning depression and
sadness from George Colman's farce Blue Devils, a Farce (1798). "

Many thanks for all the suggestions, etc about the subject of Mary in blue.
At some point in time, someone wrote a poem "Lovely Lady dressed in blue,
teach me how to pray. God was just your little boy..." It's fairly sappy but
sweet in a certain way. Usually that sort of stuff sets my teeth on edge...
I must say my favorite suggestion - with apologies to the person who posted
it because I can't remember who it was - was the one having to do with the
preciousness of the materials used to produce the color. I also recall a
paper at a convention that outlined the similarities between depictions of
Mary and those of Empress Theodora. So I suppose it is in these that I will
find a possible response rather than in the symbolism of blue, which
probably was manifold and changed much throughout the ages. Today blue is a
symbol of sorts of sadness. Which raises the question: why are the blues so
named? But if you have a response, better post it off list as this is
distinctly not medieval.
