medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. November) is the feast day of:
Colman of Cloyne (d. c. 606) This Irish Colman (there are a *lot* of
Irish saints named Colman!) was a Munster native, a poet who became a
royal bard at Cashel. He converted to Christianity, legend tells, at
about the age of fifty. C. became a priest and a bishop (he is
venerated as the first bishop and founder of Cloyne).
Enfleda (d. c. 704) Enfleda was a Northumbian princess. When her
father, King Edwin was killed in battle, E. and her mother went to
Kent. But in 642 E. returned to Northumbria and married King Oswiu.
She supported Christianity, and seems to have been quite pious---it
was disagreement between her Roman practices and Oswiu's Irish ones
that led to the Synod of Whitby. After Oswiu died, E. became a nun
at Whitby, and later abbess. E's relics were taken to Glastonbury
along with those of other Northumbrian saints when the vikings
destroyed Whitby---at least that's what William of Malmesbury says.
Albert of Louvain (d. 1192) Albert was a son of the duke of Brabant.
He was made a canon of Liege at the age of twelve---but when he was
21, A. renounced his benefice and became a knight. But then he
became a cleric again. Nobody knows why, but it's thought that A.
had wanted to go on the 3rd Crusade---he even took the crusading vow,
but never went. In 1191, A. became one of two contenders for the
bishopric of Liege. He was elected by a majority of the canons, but
Emperor Henry VI rejected the election and gave the see to somebody
else. A. appealed to the pope, who supported him and ordered his
episcopal consecration at Rheims. He was found outside the walls by
a group of German knights and murdered.
