medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. November) is the feast day of:
Didier of Cahors (d. 655) didier (Desiderius) was a noble of the
Albi area. He served at the Neustrian court until he was elected to
serve his murdered brother as bishop of Cahors. He was a good
bishop, promoting monasticism, building an aqueduct, and caring for
the education of his clergy.
Malo (6th-7th cent.) Malo (Machutus) is known as the apostle of
Brittany. Legend tells that M. was from south Wales. He became a
monk there, but soon decided to move on to Brittany. He started
preaching, built churches, founded monasteries, etc.
Fintan of Rheinau (d. c. 879) Fintan was a native of Leinster. He
was carried off in a Viking raid and after his escape lived in
Scotland. He then went on a pilgrimage to Rome, and on his way back
stopped at Rheinau (an island in the Rhine). He joined the community
of hermits there.
Leopold of Austria (d. 1136) Leopold "the Good" became margrave of
Austria at the age of 23. He founded monasteries, supported the pope
in the Investiture Contest, and fathered Otto of Freising. L. was
canonized in 1485.
Albert the Great (d. 1280) The "universal doctor" was the son of a
wealthy German noble family from the Augsburg area. Albert went to
study at the University of Padua and, to his family's dismay, became
a Dominican there. A. went on to teach in Cologne, a number of other
German cities, and Paris. In 1254 he became prior provincial for
Germany. He spent a short stint as bishop of Regensburg, but managed
to resign. A. is regarded as one of the greatest philosophers and
natural scientists of the Middle Ages. He was beatified in 1622 and
canonized in 1931.
