medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Good day, eh?
Would that we could speak of "Christianity"
in the early middle ages. I tend to think
it is not quite that simple. Were the Arians
Christian? The orthodox who persecuted
them and whom they persecuted surely
did not think so. When a band of Arians
killed a band of orthodox Christians or
vice versa, was this the spread of the
'true faith' by the sword? I, too, am a
fan of sweeping generalizations; but if
I try to stuff the sometimes ugly facts
of the early middle ages into one I just
never can get everything to fit.
Regards to all,
Frank
