medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. November) is the feast day of:
Romanus of Antioch (d. 304) Romanus was a deacon of Caesarea. When
the Great Persecution broke out, he played a leading role in urging
his fellow Christians not to give in, in particular trying to stop a
group about to sacrifice to the state gods. He was arrested, of
course, flogged, and sentenced to be burned. But the fire was put
out in a sudden rainstorm. The emperor ordered R's tongue pulled
out---but he still spoke, praising God. R. was finally strangled in
prison.
Mawes (5th cent.?) A very popular but elusive Breton saint. Lots of
churches are dedicated to him, but little is known about him. Mawes'
(Maudez, Maudetus) name is British, he may have been associated with
St. Budoc, and both may have been monks from Wales who made their way
to Brittany and founded monasteries. Another tradition tells that M
was an Irishman.
Odo of Cluny (d. 942) Odo was born to a noble family in Tours. He
was brought up at noble courts and intended a military career, but
some illness intervened when he was about 19. So he became a canon
at Tours, but after a time became a monk at Baume. This occurred at
about the time Berno of Baume was founding Cluny. Odo succeeded
Berno as abbot there in 927. He was a major monastic reformer in
France and central Italy, and is responsible for much of Cluny's
early rise to fame and large-scale monastic confederation.
