medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Canonization process acts and miracle collections from the later Middle Ages provide useful material for this kind of questions. I will cite as an example a miracle tale recorded in the 1417 hearings held in Vadstena and Linköping, Sweden, concerning the miracles of Bishop Nicolaus Hermanni (Nils Hermansson), who was Bishop of the diocese of Linköping between 1375 and 1391. The tale concerns a twelve-year-old boy (iuuenis) who together with his father was standing in the parish church of Lommaryd (Småland), listening to a sermon delivered by Bishop Nils during his visitation of this parish.
"Cum apud ecclesiam Lomarydh dyocesis sue visitacionis officium ageret ac verbum dei in eadem ecclesia predicaret, quidam iuuenis filius Kanuti de Sundhult parrochie Frinnarydh etatis annorum duodecim stans cum dicto patre suo ibidem ad audiendum verbum dei [...]"
(The story then gives an account of a rather frightening vision the boy had during the Bishop's sermon.)
The acts of the processus in partibus of Bishop Nicolas Hermanni are published in a somewhat faulty edition by Tryggve Lundén in 1963 as Sankt Nikolaus av Linköping kanonisationsprocess: Processus canonizacionis beati Nicolai Lincopensis (Stockholm: Bonniers). The miracle with the boy in Lommaryd church is mentioned on pages 66-68 and 118.
Best,
Anders Fröjmark
