medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This has been very helpful -- I figured there would be ashes of cremated and otherwise burnt martyrs, but could not think of any actual instances -- the info on John the Baptist is particularly interesting! Any more specific examples of reliquaries containing "ashes" (though as Tom I. points out, "ashes" can be an ambigiuous term) would be appreciated.
In small return for your help, here is a photo I took of the vision that appeared to S. Eustacio -- as represented on his church in Rome!
