medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. November) is the feast day of:
The Presentation of the Virgin Mary. This feast first appeared in
western Europe in the eleventh century, and then only in England.
After that, it does not appear to have been celebrated until the late
fourteenth century.
Gelasius I (d. 496) Gelasius was born in Rome (of African descent)
and eventually became an assistant and advisor to Pope Felix II. G.
succeeded Felix in 492. He had a very vigorous five-year
pontificate, especially concerned with the Acacian schism---which led
G. to a fight with the eastern emperor. He is best known today for a
letter asserting the correct relationship between religious and
secular authority, in which he makes a clear distinction between
episcopal authority and the mere "power" of earthly rulers---and
argues that the spiritual authority is definitely superior.
