medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Is there a great tradition of hunters meeting stags
> connected with crucifixes?
As John Briggs noted, the most famous example, and far older than Hubert, was St.
Eustace. There is some question about whether it was a crucifix or an apparition of
Christ himself that appeared in both cases (as opposed, apparently, to David).
Discussions of St. Eustace's "vita" often cite Near Eastern myths of miraculously
appearing stags (minus the crucifix, presumably, or with a suitable alternative), but
I've never followed these up. Perhaps somebody else knows about them?
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
