I was recently suprised to find than the Ravenna Cosmography entry
106.34 (R&C 69) Mutuantonis was equated with Lewes in the 1870 Imperial
Gazetteer of England and Wales by John Marius Wilson. "It is supposed also,
from the discovery of numerous Roman coins, urns, rings, paterę, and other
Roman relics in and near it, as well as from other slight evidence, to have
been the site of the Roman station Mutuantonis."
I presume the basis for the equation is the old name of the Ouse,
Midewinde 1237.
I have never seen mention of this elsewhere. Can anyone identify
Wilson's source?
