For anyone who believes that HOW you treat patients/clients is as (or more) important than
what you do, October is a good month to visit the DRUG AND ALCOHOL FINDINGS web site at
www.drugandalcoholfindings.org.uk
Available this month for free download are two parts of the magazine's Manners Matter
series. The series is devoted to the proposition that treating the patient/client as an
individual, being welcoming, empathic, understanding, and demonstrating respect and
active, persistent caring, are among the trademarks of services which hang on to and do
most for their clients.
Available this month for free download is the first part of the series, "The Power of the
Welcoming Reminder". It dealt with some straightforward expressions of these qualities:
responding quickly, keeping in touch, not too easily abandoning those who don't respond
first time.
Still available as a sample from the current issue is part 3 of the series, "The
motivational hallo" on motivational interviewing, the most influential counselling style
in addiction treatment. The eye-catching conclusion was that it seemed to have worked
best without a manual but the detail of the findings are fascinating, indicating that
discretion, sensitivity and social skills are vital.
