medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. October) is the feast day of:
Gereon and companions (?) A large group of martyrs of
Cologne---legend says that there were over 300 of them, a detachment
of the Theban Legion. A heap of bones was discovered at Cologne in
1121 and they were acclaimed as those of the martyrs. There is
indeed evidence that Cologne boasted some early martyrs, but the
connection to the relics is rather awkward. A 13th-century
hagiographer invented a passio and even had St. Helena find their
relics.
Maharsapor (d. c. 424) The noble Persian Maharsapor was a Christian
caught in the persecution of King Vahram V. He was tortured, kept in
a dungeon for three years, and finally thrown into a pit to starve to
death.
Cerbonius of Piombino (d. c. 575) Cerbonius was one of several
bishops driven out of North Africa by the Vandals. C. went to
Populonia (Piombino, Tuscany) and became bishop there. Then the
Lombards invaded, and he relocated to the island of Elba.
Paulinus of York (d. 644) Paulinus was sent to England in 601 to
support Augustine's mission. He was made a bishop and sent with
Princess Ethelburga to Northumbria when she married King Edwin. He
finally convinced the king and a number of nobles to be baptized, and
Christianity soon caught on rapidly. Paulinus had to flee when Edwin
was killed in battle; he then became bishop of Rochester.
