medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (7. October) is the feast day of:
Mark (d. 336) Not the evangelist, but a pope of that name. Mark
succeeded Sylvester as pope in 336, ruling eight months before his
death. The church of San Marco in Rome was probably built by M., and
most of his relics are there.
Helan of Cornwall (?) Helan was an Irish priest who went with a
group of missionaries (probably his siblings) to Cornwall. They went
on from there to Brittany and founded several churches. Cornish
churches dedicated to St. Helen were probably intended in his honor.
Osyth (d. c. 675) Osyth was a Mercian noblewoman. She was raised in
a convent and wanted to become a nun, but was married off to the king
of the East Saxons. She then refused to consummate the marriage; the
king was upset (legend says), but was distracted when a white stag
suddenly appeared and lured him off to the hunt. In her husband's
absence, O. convinced two bishops to consecrate her as a nun. The
king eventually agreed to the fait accompli. The legend then tells
that O. was caught by some nonchristian pirates, who beheaded
her---either because she resisted being carried off or because she
refused to join them in their heathenish rites. She then carried her
head to a nearby church and placed it on the altar. Not to doubt the
historicity of this account, but O. and her husband produced a son,
which makes one suspect her virginity.
Artaldus (Arthaud) (d. 1206) The Savoyard Artaldus became a
Carthusian and soon was installed as prior of Val Romey, later moved
to Arvieres. His holiness became famous and he attracted some
impressively important correspondents, such as Pope Alexander III.
When A. was over 80, the pope ordered him to become bishop of Belley.
But A. resigned after two years and returned to his monastery, dying
at the ripe age of 105.
