medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. October) is the feast day of:
Luke (1st cent.) Luke is traditionally regarded as the author of the
3rd gospel and Acts. Early traditions tell that L. was a missionary
in Greece; later tradition tells that he was one of the first 70
disciples AND one of the two disciples who met Jesus on the road to
Emmaus. The evangelist may be the Luke mentioned in Colossians,
Timothy, and Philemon. L. is the patron saint of physicians and
painters (a 6th-cent. tradition tells that he painted a portrait of
the Virgin Mary).
Justus of Beauvais (?) Legend tells that Justus was a young boy,
martyred by decapitation perhaps in the reign of Diocletian. J's
cult was popular in much of northwest Europe; the monastery of
Malmedy (Belgium) claimed to have bought his body in the tenth
century. J. was a cephalophore saint---when beheaded (legend tells),
the body picked it up and carried it to where he wanted to be buried.
