medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. October) is the feast day of:
Thecla of Kitzingen (d. c. 790) Thecla was part of the team of nuns
sent from Wessex to help Boniface in his missionary work in 748 or
749; she was a kinswoman of St. Lioba. T. became abbess of
Ochsenfurt, and soon of Kitzingen as well. There is some late
medieval evidence of a cult in the area; her shrine was destroyed
during the Peasant War of 1525.
Euthymius the Younger (d. 898) Euthymius born at Opso (near odern
Ancyra, Turkey). He married young, but at about the age of 18
abandoned his wife and daughter to join an eremitic community on Mt.
Olympus in Bithynia. In 858 he went on to Mt. Athos. He became
quite famous; crowds came to hear him preach and watch his
spectacular exorcisms. He kept fleeing further and further to get
away from his fans, and finally restored a ruined monastery with his
disciples.
Teresa of Avila (d. 1582) Outside of our period, but a Very Important Saint.
