medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
In Scandinavia is there no doubt about the status of all major Vigils as
a proper feast in its own right. The Breviary had before the Reformation
a "Officium proprium" with 3 lessons for the ('simple') feast of Vigilia.
This is in particular made clear at Christmas, where the Vigil
(on the 24th) had its own Vigil the day before!
In the calendars of all liturgical books from the archdiocese of Lund
called **"Vigilia vigilie"** on 23rd December, also with a proper choir
office (with 3 lessons)!
Like it was on feasts of all degrees did a Vigil not exclude a
commemoration ("Memorie") of eventual saints on the day during mass.
The peculiar custom is still very much alive today at home in the
families, where the evening on the 23rd centuries ago developed its
own cultural traditions as a 'day before the day' event (in Denmark
is Christmas celebrated on the evening of the 24th, as it obviously
already was before the Reformation).
