medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
According to the Irish life of St. Columba, Odran volunteered to die as
a kind of sacrifice to the land so that the monks would have 'roots' in
their new home.

culture
Today (27. October) is the feast day of:
Frumentius and Aedesius (d. c. 380) F and A were two youths who
ended up in Ethiopia (the ship they were on stopped at a port, a
fight started, and everyone else was killed). They entered the
king's household and used their position to encourage Christianity,
winning special privileges for the religion. F. eventually went to
Alexandria and was sent back as a bishop to continue the good work;
A. returned eventually to his hometown of Tyre.
Odran of Iona (d. c. 563) Odran, a Briton, was one of Columba's
first monks at Iona. He died soon after arriving on the
island---Columba saw his soul ascending to heaven. Irish tradition
tells that Odran was an abbot in Ireland and founder of Latteragh
(Co. Tipperary).
