medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Well, the devil seems to have preferred midnight; in the
Middle English poem _Sir Gawain and the Green Knight_,
Gawain arrives at the Green Chapel where he has an
appointment with the Green Knight and finds that it is
no more than a sinister-looking hollow mound in a wild
landscape:
"We! Lord" quoth the gentyle knyght,
"Whether this be the grene chapelle?
Here myght aboute mydnyght
The dele [devil] his matynnes telle!"
(lines 2185-8)
