medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. October) is the feast day of:
Artemius (d. 363) Artemius was imperial prefect in Egypt; since he
was an Arian, he spent quite a bit of effort harrying Athanasius. He
also went around attacking pagan cult centers. Which got him into
trouble with Julian the Apostate in 361. A's property was
confiscated and he was beheaded in 363. Eastern Christians regard A.
as a martyr despite his Arian proclivities. His shrine was noted for
miraculous cures.
Acca of Hexham (d. 740) The Northumbrian Acca was a disciple of
Wilfrid who succeeded his mentor to the see of Hexham in 709. He won
a reputation for godlines and learning. In 732 A. left his diocese
(either retiring or exiled) and went to Galloway (Scotland), where he
may have become bishop of Whitthorn.
Andrew of Crete (d. 766) Andrew was a Cretan monk who went to
Constantinople to help fight the emperors' iconoclastic policies. He
made an extremely passionate protest during the public torture and
execution of a number of icon-supporters---an event at which Emperor
Constantine V was present. Constantine was not amused, especially
when A. went on to accuse him of heresy. Bystanders beat A; he was
rescued but, since he was still recalcitrant the next day, was
flogged and led through the streets as an example. While being
dragged along, a vigorous iconoclast stabbed him to death. The crowd
then threw A's corpse into a cesspit.
