The method also seems to have been used extensively by the Ordnance
Survey in the earlier twenieth century for 1:2500 and larger scale
mapping (I believe the 1:10,560 were always on negatives): I think this
is the meaning of the note 'Reprint by direct helio' sometimes
encountered (not least on Alan Godfrey reprints!). I have not heard of
it being used commercially, though as it saves the use of a camera and
subsequent photo-processing it would seem well suited to limited runs
of maps for e.g. estate agency purposes.
