As a shameless plug for Open Source Software
Bodington has a new version out now - Version 2.6 - which can be run as a
stand-alone version to explore off the Knopix bootable CD. It gives all the
functionality of the system, small practice site of resources and absolutely
no installation.
As an added bonus, this time we have packaged a Quickstart war file which
can be dropped into Tomcat to provide a very quick installation (30 seconds
or thereabouts!)
I'm not sure how the 600 released copies of the previous version, or the 76
downloads last week alone from sourceforge count in the numbers game vs
Blackboard etc! But all of them totally free :-)

We've got a registered Moodle installation, but we're not using it in
practice (yet).
You are much less likely to install and then not use something that has been
paid for.
It's one of the BEST things about free software (I mean software with no up
front licence/purchase cost) that it can be properly evaluated by the people
who will use it and not by bean counters. And yes, of course total cost of
ownership is not zero or anything like, but at least the important people
can get there hands on something early on in the decision making process
before its all set in stone.
