medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. October) is the feast day of:
Ammon (d. c. 350) Ammon was a particularly famous monk of the
Nitrian desert in Egypt. His relatives made him marry, but he and
his wife lived together virginally. When his relatives died and
stopped picking on him, A. celebrated by going out to the desert. He
founded a monastic center and lived a life noteworthy for its
austerity.
Petronius of Bologna (d. c. 445) Petronius might have been the son
of a Roman army officer who held civil office before becoming a
priest in Italy. Twelfth-century legend adds that he went on
pilgrimage to the Holy Land to collect relics. P. became bishop of
Bologna in c. 432, occupying himself with clearing away the mess left
by the Gothic invasion.
Francis of Assisi (d. 1226) Perhaps the most popular saint ever spawned.
