Ah, once again you've transformed our understanding, Shannon. Your book will be a must-read.
As ever,

Dave -- on marriages "in facie ecclesie," I found that in descriptions of
solemnizations in London in the fifteenth century that that phrase sometimes
quite clearly meant "before the congregation" (which is actually how the
canonist Lyndwood glossed it in the fifteenth century), rather than "at the
door of the church": sometimes a witness to a solemnization of marriage would
say that the words of consent were exchanged in the *nave* of the church, "in
facie ecclesie". In London, there are no descriptions where exchanges of
consent took place in the church porch (one witness does describe such a
solemnization that took place in Cambridge); there are a number that clearly
describe the exchange of consent happening in the nave; and most, of course,
don't specify one way or another. Clearly in London church porch weddings were
by no means universal, and in fact I couldn't find any mention of them. This
is not to say that they weren't common/normal elsewhere in England, but I
think that sometimes people have tended to over-generalize partly because of
the ambiguity of the phrase "in facie ecclesie". I discuss all this, by the
way, in a forthcoming book: I'll send you separately the passages with all the
