medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

>....doubtless in churches elsewhere where either the lay of the land or an
inherited urban plan has led to a north/south orientation, north doors exist
for reasons that have not yet been mentioned in this thread.
the most famous example (or, at least the only one i can think of) of a N-S
oriented church in France is the famous "cathedral" of St. Lazare at Autun,
which was not the original cathedral of the city but was, for some reason i've
never gotten straight, built on a North-South axis in front of the West facade
of the (now virtually destroyed) cathedral.
"Gislebertus'" elaborate Last Judgement thus appears on the South (main)
Portal of the church, while his enigmatic "Eve" was originally on the smaller
East Portal.
there must be other instances of non-"Orientation" in France but, as i say, i
can't think of another major example of one just at present.
Jim will come up with some, probably.
