medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Offertorium – 49
The Mass for Monday in Easter Week continues the themes we have seen at
the Easter Vigil and the Mass of Easter Day. The Introit Antiphon is
from Exodus 13, verses 5 and 9. ‘God has led you into a land of milk
and honey’ – once again the parallel between the death and resurrection
of Jesus, and the deliverance from Egypt and entrance into the Holy
Land:
Introduxit vos Dominus in terram fluentem lac, et mel, alleluia: et lex
Domini semper sit in ore vestro, alleluia, alleluia.
The verse is Psalm 104:1
Confitemini Domino, et invocate nomen eius: annuntiate inter gentes
opera eius.
This psalm, should anyone care to read it, is all about the Exodus; it
relates the plagues God sent upon Egypt, and how Pharaoh sent away the
people of Israel, and how God fed them on quails and manna.
The Gradual, like that for Easter Day itself, is from Psalm 117. On the
Sunday it consists of verses 24 and 1, on the Monday of verses 24 and
2:
Haec dies, quam fecit Dominus: exsultemus, et laetemur in ea.
Dicat nunc Israel, quoniam bonus: quoniam in saeculum misericordia
eius.
The Alleluia is a resurrection text, from Matthew 28:2
Angelus Domini descendit de caelo: et accedens revolvit lapidem, et
sedebat super eum.
This is followed by the Sequence, ‘Victimae paschali’ as on Easter Day;
this is sung throughout the week, up to and including the following
Sunday.
The Offertorium will be familiar to students of medieval drama. It is
Matthew 28, verses 2, 5 and 6:
Angelus Domini descendit de caelo, et dixit mulieribus: Quem quaeritis,
surrexit, sicut dixit, alleluia.
And the Communio, Luke 24:34, is taken from the Gospel for the day:
Surrexit Dominus, et apparuit Petro, alleluia.
I shall be off-list for a couple of weeks as I am about to set out on
my holidays. I look forward to hearing more of your scholarly opinions,
and sharing my own humble thoughts with you, on my return.
Bill.
