medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. August) is the feast day of:
Monica (d. 387) Augustine of Hippo's mom. We know about her through
her son's writings; Gussie tells that his mother was deeply devout,
patient, and endlessly praying for her son's conversion. She was
married to Patricius, whom she gradually christianized. The couple
had at least three children---Gus, Navigius, and Perpetua. When Gus
escaped to Italy, M. followed him there, moving on to Milan. She was
going to return to Africa with her son, but died at Ostia. Her feast
day used to be 4. May.
Poemen (5th cent.) The desert father Poemen settled in the Skete
desert with several fellows, eventually moving to Terenuthis to
escape raiding Berbers. In the Byzantine liturgy, he is called the
"lamp of the universe and pattern of monks." Which probably sums it
up nicely.
Caesarius of Arles (d. 543) The Gallo-Roman Caesarius was
well-educated, became a monk at Lerins, entered the service of his
kinsman the bishop of Arles, and in time became bishop of the city
himself. During his 40-year episcopate, C. organized the diocese
thoroughly, encouraged monasticism, preached to very good effect (his
sermons were written down and reached audiences in much of western
Europe, according to his earliest vita), and managed to get along
with both Burgundian and Visigoth rulers. C. was the first western
European bishop to receive the pallium from a pope.
