medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. August) is the feast day of:
Symphorian (3rd cent.) Symphorian was a martyr of Autun. He was
disrespectful toward a statue of Cybele that was being processed
through the streets; the crowd grabbed S. and took him to the
governor. The governor tried everything he could think of to make S.
conform to the imperial edicts, but finally had him beheaded.
Sigfrid (d. 690) Sigfrid was coadjutor abbot at Wearmouth for
Benedict Biscop when BB was off to Rome on one of his many trips.
Bede writes well of him.
Philip Benizi (d. 1285) The Florentine Philip Benizi was a noble who
studied medicine and philosophy and started a medical practice in
Florence. He joined the young Servite order, living a life of hard
manual labor for years as a lay brother. Eventually the prior
general made P a priest. . . within a few years he was elected
general of the order. P. was known for his skill at mediation---he
even got the Guelfs and Ghibellines to stop fighting each other for a
time. P. was canonized in 1671.
