medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. August) is the feast day of:
Claudius, Asterius, and Neon (d. c. 303) Greek legend tells that
these were three brothers, crucified in Isauria (the Latin acta say
it was Cilicia). The three were denounced to the authorities as
Christians by their stepmother.
Eoghan (Owen, Eugene) (6th cent.) Eoghan, according to tradition,
was the first bishop of Ardstraw (Ireland). His late vita tells that
he and two other boys were carried off by pirates when they were
young. They were taken first to Britain and then to Brittany, where
they were sold as slaves. They were released when their owner came
by and saw that the three were sitting around reading---an angel was
obligingly milling the grain they were supposed to be tending to.
All three returned to Ireland. E. became a monk and eventually a
bishop.
