medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (29. August) is the feast day of (and may be the last column
for several days; I'm about 70 miles inland, but right in the path of
Hurricane Katrina, so the most optimistic forecast is that we'll lose
power for a few days):
the passion of John the Baptist (1st cent.) This is John's death-day
(dies natalis), celebrated as a lesser feast compared to the day of
his birth (unlike almost all saints).
Sebbe (d. c. 694) Sebbe became co-king of the East Saxons in 664.
Many Saxons had taken a major plague epidemic as evidence of the
gods' displeasure at their conversion, so they had to be reconverted,
with the firm support of S. After a reign of 30 years, S abdicated
and became a monk. He died soon afterward.
Medericus (d. c. 700) Medericus (Merry) was born at Autun, became a
monk and abbot, and got a reputation for extreme holiness. He tried
to retreat to a hermitage, but was tracked down and forced to return.
In his old age he made a pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Germanus in
Paris and settled as a recluse in the city.
John of Perugia and Peter of Sassoferrato (blessed) (d. 1231) John
was a Franciscan priest; Peter was a lay brother. They preached
publicly in Muslim-controlled Valencia---but not for long. They were
arrested and beheaded.
