Another interesting question!
A GP was asking about MR FIT (multiple risk factor interventions trial) of years ago (I think mid/late 1970’s) which examined the benefits, or not, of screening a general adult population for high risk of CVD.
Has this type of study been repeated with a more recent population/recent screening tools?
The question has been stimulated by the GPs ‘worry’ that the UK government might introduce a mass screening programme of the adult population for high risk CVD with the net result of medicalising a large number of patients with little proven benefit.
In one way the question is incorrect for his worry. I think the question is really “What is the effectiveness of mass screening asymptomatic patients for CVD” – which is more answerable. However, the GP asked specifically about a repeated MR FIT style trial.
