medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. August) is the feast day of:
Nathy and Felim (6th cent.?) Two Irish saints who had nothing to do
with each other, but are jointly commemorated today. Felim,
according to tradition, was the first bishop of Kilmore. Nathy was
active at Achonry. He was known as "the priest."
John of Salerno (blessed) (d. c. 1242) Giovanni Guarna of Salerno
met St. Dominic while studying at Bologna and joined the nascent
Order of Preachers. He was noted as a preacher and confessor---one
woman was so infatuated with him that she pretended to be sick and
when he came to her bedside she tried to seduce him. He went away
and prayed. His cult was approved in 1783.
Richard Bere (blessed) (d. 1537) Richard Bere was one of those
unfortunate Carthusians who refused to accede to Henry VIII's new
religious policy. He died of starvation in the Marshalsea prison.
His cult, with that of the other Carthusian martyrs, was recognized
in 1886.
Since I'm fond of her, I'll take the liberty of mentioning that today
is also the feast of Edith Stein (Teresa Benedicta of the Cross), d.
1942.
