medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I might be asking a rather ambitious and general question which requires a
lengthier response. I was intrigued by the idea of bleeding Hosts(Eucharist
props) onstage in sacramental plays of the Middle Ages, and also on the
enactment of Christ's scourged body inside these plays as well. So far, the
familiar example of the Croxton Play of the Sacrament, with its stipulation
of 'yhere the host must blede', that the Eucharist prop must produce its
proof of bleeding onstage to convince and proselytize the hardened Jews(also
characters onstage), comes to mind. Are there other examples and other plays
which allow for the enactment of such moments, whether it is through a
mimetic reproduction of the Mass or a mimetic reproduction of the
Crucifixion? I work mainly in English and French, but examples from other
vernaculars or Latin would be appreciated as well.
Sincerely,
Kevin Jang
