medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (19. July) is the feast day of:
Macrina the Younger (d. 379) Macrina was the eldest child of SS
Basil the Elder and Emmelia, born in Caesarea (Cappadocia). She
vowed not to marry and stayed home to educate her equally saintly
brothers Basil the Great, Peter of Sebaste, and Gregory of Nyssa. M
then settled down to live in poverty in a community of women.
Arsenius (d. 450) Arsenius was a Roman, born in c 350 to a
senatorial family. He tutored those unpromising imperial offspring,
Arcadius and Honorius, then gave up and went to Egypt to become a
hermit.
Symmachus (d. 514) Symmachus was a Sardinian, an adult convert to
Christianity. He was a deacon in Rome before being elected pope in
498 in a split election. He spent much of his time trying to assert
his claim to office, eventually succeeding and settling down to be a
vigorous pontiff---kicking the Manichaeans out of Rome, helping
victims of the Arian persecution in Africa, building churches, and so
on.
Bernulf of Utrecht (d. 1054) Conrad II appointed Bernulf (or
Bernold) bishop of Utrecht; it is likely that he was an imperial
official. B. was active in expanding his diocese and also promoted
the Cluniac reform in his diocese.
