medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. July) is the feast day of:
Philastrius (late 4th cent.) Legend tells that Philastrius (or
Filaster) was a wandering heretic-hunter of the fourth century,
especially active in rooting out Arians. He traveled through many
provinces of the Roman Empire, often attacked more physically by the
people he was attacking verbally. He became bishop of Brescia
sometime before 381. He also wrote a *Catalogue of Heresies* that
refutes 28 Jewish and 128 Christian heresies.
Pambo (d. c. 390) Pambo may have been a disciple of Antony of the
Desert before joining St. Ammon in Nitria. P's desert regime
specialized particularly in silence.
Arnulf of Metz (d. 640) Arnulf served at the Austrasian court, but
eventually resigned. He wanted to become a monk, but the people of
Metz asked for him as bishop. His son was the father of the
Carolingian Pepin of Heristal.
Frederick of Utrecht (d. 838) Frederick was a priest, in charge of
instructing converts, before becoming bishop of Utrecht in c. 825.
F. got involved in the fight between Emperor Louis the Pious and his
sons---and even accused Empress Judith of immorality. F. was
murdered while working as a missionary at Walcheren; an 11th-century
vita says that the murderers were working for Judith, although
hagiologists say this is unlikely.
Bruno of Segni (d. 1123) The Piedmontese Bruno studied at Bologna
and Siena before becoming a canon at Siena. In 1080 Gregory VII
appointed B bishop of Segni, and he proved to be a vigorous partisan
of the papacy and of reform more generally. Many in B's diocese
didn't like his reforms, and he ran away to Monte Cassino, where he
became a monk and abbot in 1107 (although keeping his episcopal
position). He finally returned to Segni when ordered to by Paschal
II. B. was a leading scriptural commentator and also wrote a vita of
Leo IX. He was canonized in 1183.
Simon of Lipnicza (blessed) (d. 1482) Simon was a pious Pole who
fell under the influence of John of Capistrano and became an
Observant Franciscan. S. held a variety of posts in the order and
was famous for his preaching. He fell ill of the plague while
nursing victims in Cracow, and died. S. was beatified in 1685.
