The MSc in Geoinformation Technology and Cartography at U of Galsgow includes a significant amount of hands on cartographic design and production including map digitization.
It is possible to do a 4 month PG certificate too. See www.geog.gla.ac.uk for more information on the MSc programme.
We have also run some short courses on digitising for a Local Authority and could run this more generally if there is sufficient demand

Giles:
Admittedly as an 'oblique' approach - or double-check for the latest
news regarding possible extension of a course to include 'modern'
cartography - have you contacted those institutions listed under
'College and university level courses in the history of cartography' on
http://www.maphistory.info/courses.html#listeur?
Perhaps your bringing attention to these institutions the lack of a
chronological 'continuum' might bring forth the incentive to provide you
with an entry or two (being quite optimistic!); or maybe everything is
'pure' GIS nowadays?
Yours half-helpfully,
Francis Herbert

Subject: Courses in Cartography
Dear Lis-maps
I am currently compiling a new edition of the booklet 'Careers in
Cartography' on behalf of the British Cartographic Society, for
publication
in printed form and on the web.
In researching, I have not yet found a single sub-degree or degree
course in
cartography left in the UK. As of this morning, the last course I had
any
hope was still running (at Glasgow Metropolitan College, in topographic
science) was confirmed as 'no longer available'.
Does anyone know of any courses, at whatever level, which have a
reasonable
cartographic content running in the UK? If so, I would be very grateful
to
hear of them.
Please reply to [log in to unmask], if not to the list.
Many thanks
Giles Darkes
