medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello,
I was hoping I could ask for a bit of help regarding a very
interesting hymnal that was brought to my attention as part
of my work on vernacular and Latin spiritual primers in 15th
century Spain.
The manuscript contains the hymns used on Sunday's from
Advent through Lent. The hymns are written in Latin and
divided into stanzas. After each stanza, a scribe composed
a vernacular gloss that primarily provides a translation of
the Latin text. However, the gloss at times has basic
devotions too.
My questions are fairly basic. Has anybody run across such
a manuscript that combined a Latin Hymnal that broke the
hymns into stanzas and then provided a vernacular
translation/commentary after each stanza? Also, has anybody
seen this form of pericopic Latin text/vernacular gloss
style in another form of liturgical manuscript?
Thanks for any help,
Daniel
