medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Offertorium – 16
The chants for Sunday 3 after Epiphany tell a similar story to those
for Sunday 2. The Introit antiphon is taken from Psalm 96, 7-8:
Adorate Deum omnes Angeli eius: audivit, et laetitia est Sion: et
exsultaverunt filiae Judae.
One recalls the Introit for Sunday 3, ‘Omnis terra adoret te, Deus,’
and its Alleluia, ‘Laudate Dominum omnes Angelis eius.’
The psalm-verse is verse 1 of the same psalm:
Dominus regnavit, exsultet terra: laetentur insulae multae.
And this is reprised as the Alleluia.
The Gradual, Ps. 101:16-17, continues the Epiphany theme with is
mention of ‘gentes’ and ‘reges’:
Timebunt gentes nomen tuum, Domine, et omnes reges terrae gloriam tuam.
Quoniam aedificavit Dominus Sion, et videbitur in majestate sua.
The Offertorium (Ps. 117:16-17) continues the theme of the Lord
performing marvellous things:
Dextera Domini fecit virtutem, dextera Domini exaltavit me: non moriar,
sed vivam, et narrabo opera Domini.
Once again it is the Communion which is coming from a different angle,
for it consists of a verse from St Luke’s Gospel (4:22), somewhat
adapted:
Mirabantur omnes de his, quae procedebant de ore Dei.
This is not actually from the Gospel for the day, which is Matthew
8:1-13, relating two miracles of Jesus; but it is a fair enough
response to those miracles.
There is a variable number of Sundays after Epiphany, depending on
whether Easter falls early or late, and some or all of the remaining
Sundays after Epiphany may not occur in a particular year. For this
reason, no doubt, the chants for the fourth, fifth and sixth Sundays
after the Epiphany are all the same as those for the third. Why go to
the trouble of selecting special chants for a day which may not
actually occur?
Bill.
