medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I recall an exchange we had a while back in which you referred to Sta Maria
Assunta as Venice's first cathedral and I remarked that I had just been to
Venice and San Pietro di Castello makes that claim. You agreed. However, SMA
is apparently cathedral of some diocese - unless we have a lot of folks who
confuse "cathedral" with "really big and important church." Is this a
situation like that of Saint-Denis, elevated rather late in life to the
status of cathedral (I still don't know of what exactly), or something else
entirely?
As an aside, I'll point out that ages ago, when I was heavily into Trivial
Pursuit, the "correct" answer to "What is the largest cathedral in the
world?" was "Saint Peter's in Rome." I did not rest until the question was
removed from the communal game.
