The Center for Geodynamics at the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU)
Two year post-doctoral position (Researcher)
Geophysicist/Geodynamicist
The Geodynamic Center at the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) seeks an
energetic, highly motivated and dedicated post-doctoral researcher to
participate in the project "FRONTIER SCIENCE AND EXPLORATION: THE
ATLANTIC - ARCTIC" (www.geodynamics.no). The main objectives in this
project include generating refined Mesozoic-Cenozoic plate
reconstructions and basin evolution models, paleo-topography and
bathymetry, identifying and characterizing continental ocean boundaries,
characterizing plate margin deformation, interpreting relationships
between Large Igneous Provinces and plate tectonics, and to understand
processes in the deep mantle and their relation to plate motions. We are
seeking a candidate with background and interest in one or several of
the above fields. Regional knowledge on the development of the
Atlantic-Barents Sea-Arctic would be considered advantageous. The
applicant would also have the opportunity to participate in the GPlates
project, a platform-independent reconstruction and modeling software
package currently undergoing development by an international group of
researchers. The Geodynamics team emphasizes feedback between
field/laboratory observations and theoretical modeling, and the
applicant should have a demonstrated ability to work within a
multidisciplinary framework. Permanent hiring of outstanding applicants
will be assessed during the post-doctoral period.
The Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) is the central national
institution, responsible for knowledge of the bedrock, mineral
resources, quaternary deposits and groundwater resources of mainland
Norway. Its tasks include geological, geophysical and geochemical
mapping, development and maintenance of databases, research, information
activities and advice to governmental bodies. NGU has a staff of 215
(including representatives of 17 nationalities), most of them based in
Trondheim. 60% of the staff are scientists. The Geodynamics team is
engaged in developing robust and unifying models that can explain the
coupling between mantle and plate evolution through Earth history.
NGU encourages applications from female scientists. We can offer a
favourable working environment, unique scientific challenges and good
possibilities for participation in international fora and in further
education programmes. A kindergarten is run by and for NGUs employees.
The Post doctoral position carries a salary of approximately 400.000 NOK
annually, dependent on qualification and experience.
Additional information can be obtained from Professor Trond H. Torsvik
([log in to unmask]), NGU Geodynamic team leader, or Divisional
Director Morten Smelror ([log in to unmask])
Applicants should send an application and curriculum vita, and the names
of individuals who have agreed to provide letters of reference, by email
to Personnel Manager Bente Halvorsen ([log in to unmask]) or by
post to The Geological Survey of Norway, N-7491 Trondheim. We seek
applications by September 1st but position remains vacant until filled
by a qualified candidate.
