It's also worth checking all technology including relatively simple stuff like compasses. Some years ago whilst mapping in the southern hemisphere I realised that the Silva compass I had borrowed had a magnetic declination that was 10-15° out. Basically, the plastic teeth had worn away so the grub screw no longer held the housing in the right place. So, when you cleaned it it would change the declination! I noticed this when the direction I was getting on the map didn't line up with a landmark I could see with my eyes.
Caveat Emptor?

Hi Mathias, you are the obvious captain for the digital guys team in Tim Wynn's competition! Perhaps we can get Trimble to sponsor the event?
Seriously, the issue is that none of us has any doubt that digital mapping tools provide a very significant new tool in our armoury and properly used give us a big step forward. However the technology itself and where it fits alongside the more traditional, older, tools is something we are still learning to balance for ourselves and for many of us there is a key concern about making sure that what we get is better, not just more.
Given that climbers now walk off cliffs on the advice of their gps where before the fell off a different cliff because they were lost; our kids pull out their phones to use the calc function to work out how to share the price of the ice cream and weekend sailors sail onto rocks because their echo sounder says there is water under their keel at the stern we need this debate to find the comfort zone of the technology, not to turn the clock back.

Dear Alan,
yes, until half a year ago I have been a mapping field geologist. I mapped some hundred maybe thousands of square kilometers for researching institutes, government and industry. Mapping without GIS? Never again!
All,
if you want to get a demo of GPS systems, I can recommend you to contact Andy Beckerson from Survey Supplies Ltd. for all UK geologists: Mobile 07703 113241, E-mail: [log in to unmask]
With him you can make a date for a demo. That's easy. Then you will know the facts of most recent mapping & GIS.
Mathias
