well, i suppose that they could be about anything, Stan.

including, as i said, what they look like, which is nothing so much as long
handled spades.
seems to me that either parasols or "banners" --both of which are associated
with processions in documents and/or images-- is a better guess, however.
i imagine a "banner" in this context to be one of the type where the cloth
doesn't hang from the top of the pole on which it is being carried (like a
flag), but rather is suspended from a cross-piece on the pole so that the
image and/or inscription on it is continually legible.
i don't believe i've ever seen a middlevil depiction of one of those in an
ecclesiastical context, however.
and i *know* i've never seen one of an image on top of a pole, whether covered
with a veil or not.
