medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. June) is the feast day of:
Cyril of Alexandria (d. 444) Bishop Cyril of Alexandria is one of
the more important doctors of the church; the Syrian mass
commemorates him as "a tower of truth and interpreter of the Word of
God made flesh."Cyril became patriarch of Alexandria (succeeding his
uncle) in 412. He was an "orthodoxy at all costs" guy, driving the
Jews from Alexandria, shutting Novationist churches, and his
followers murdered the Neoplatonist philosopher Hypatia. But his
chief cause was the fight against Nestorianism.
Samson of Constantinople (5th cent.) Samson was a priest who founded
a major hospital for poor sick people in Constantinople, working
there personally.
John of Chinon (6th cent.) John was a hermit who settled at Chinon.
Tradition says he came from Brittany. He won a reputation as a
healer and holy man.
George Mtasmindeli (or "the Athonite) (d. 1066) "Mtasmindeli" means
"of the Black Mountain." He was sent off to the monastic life at age
7, but followed an uncle to a chaplaincy in a noble house, where G.
got a good classical education. G. settled down as a monk and served
as abbot of several monasteries on Mt. Athos and the Black Mountain.
He is credited with reforming the Georgian church.
Ladislas of Hungary (d. 1095) Ladislas became king of Hungary in
1077. He spent most of his reign fighting the neighbors---as a model
of chivalry, of course. L. made a close alliance with Pope Gregory
VII. He was so notorious as a champion of Christianity that he was
invited to lead the First Crusade---a task he accepted, but he died
before setting out. L. was canonized in 1191.
