here's a detail of one set of the Puglia capitals, showing the damage pretty
clearly:

note that part of the simple (undecorated) molding of the impost block has
been chiseled off as well.
we sometimes see that sort of thing, but usually it was done when something
was added and part of the old stone got in the way of the addition.
but that doesn't seem to be the case here, and we have the capitals below
defaced as well, and it appears that most (all?) of the other capitals in main
arcade were also worked over.
