Since BDS supplies most of the public libraries in Britain with Dewey
numbers either directly or indirectly through library suppliers, I feel I
should reassure librarians that this problem does not originate at BDS. I
have checked all instances of the titles Helen has mentioned in our database
and none has an incorrect Dewey number.
This sounds rather like a systems problem, either the library system in Vale
of Glamorgan or her library supplier's system. I know from past experience
in the library supply industry that programming problems can result in an
empty field taking the data from the equivalent field in an adjacent record
and it may well be a similar problem in this instance.

Subject: Dewey numbers
I have a vague recollection that someone somewhere collects incorrect Dewey
numbers. We have had a lot of very strange numbers on our imported records
recently and think it is time we told someone about them - has anyone got
the details of who to talk to about this?
Examples : Worse things happen at sea - number for European trees
Lady Caroline Lamb : a biography at 327.7304
Greek Island hopping at a World War I number
Liza Minelli scrapbook at Ghosts and supernatural number
Book about a joust to the death in 13th century France at the rugby number
