At North Tyneside we would not at this point consider banning games, partly
because they are a legitimate use of the system by young people, and also,
as you say, they bring young people in. However, we do increasingly have
problems with challenging behaviour, and are looking at various ways of
dealing with this, such as working with the youth service. I'd be
interested to hear if anyone has had success in dealing with the behaviour
while not removing access to gaming.

Subject: Re: Online games

Forgive me breaking into a debate which isn't in my immediate remit, but a
couple of points occur to me.

- this group is one of our hard to reach customer groups that most people
would agree we want to encourage use of. It seems strange that increasing
use by a hard to reach group should be viewed mainly or solely as a
problem - I would say those of you who are experiencing increase in teenage
use of libraries should be celebrating your success first and treating the
challenges it throws up as incidental problems that can be overcome
- I wonder if the best approach would be to split off the use of games etc
from the problem behaviour issue. By doing so, you won't tar all teenage
gamers with the same brush, and I'm sure some, if not the majority, do not
cause problems. You could address issues such as length of use separately -
PCs in the teenage area, with different access rules perhaps, possibly drawn
up in consultation with the users? Problem behaviour by young people is an
area that a lot of library services have experience of and deal with/manage
so best practice could be established - eg look at some teen-oriented
services such as Moss Side Powerhouse in Manchester as exemplars

Best of luck with it and - because everyone always seems to interpret the
latest CIPFA stuff only in terms of bad news, we should big up those library
services who are getting the youth in!

Unlocking the top 20,000 titles

British Library launches new research resource

Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and independent researchers
are to benefit from a versatile new pay-as-you-go service launched by
the British Library. BRITISH LIBRARY DIRECT provides, for the first
time, access to a fully searchable database of article titles from the
top 20,000 international research journals.=20

These records go back five years and currently number around nine
million - with 150,000 new entries added each month.
Upon finding the relevant article, the user can then order it online and
pay by his/her credit card to have the full text delivered to their
desktop within as little as 2 hours. There is no need to subscribe in
order to use the service and articles can be ordered singly or several
at a time. Nearly 20% of the articles available can be downloaded
instantly. To sample the new service, visit: http://direct.bl.uk
<http://direct.bl.uk>=20

British Library Direct will be particularly attractive to occasional
users such as SMEs and independent researchers and innovators. The
pay-as-you-go option offers easy access to the very latest research
articles without the need to open an account. Subject strengths include
medicine, pharmacy, engineering, science, food and agriculture,
economics, environment, law and education. An additional feature allows
users to view abstracts of the articles found by rolling their mouse
over the article details.

Lynne Brindley, Chief Executive at the British Library said, "We exist
for everyone who wants to do research and have been working hard to make
our collection more accessible and relevant. The launch of British
Library Direct is another significant step towards that goal. It offers
the academic, personal and commercial researcher ready access to our
most popular journals without the need to be a registered user or have
an account with us."=20

Broadening Horizons
NEMLAC=92s Broadening Horizons is an exciting programme of work with non-Hub=

Phase 2
NEMLAC now wishes to run a second, more audience-focused phase to build on
these foundations. Phase 2 will be made up of three linked sub-projects.
Each has a specific focus, which lies at the heart of museum practice:

1. Labels =96 fresh perspectives on an age-old format

The project will take place between August 2005 and the end of March 2006.
